Halosulfuron methyl is mainly used in sugarcane fields, rice fields, tomato fields, corn fields, wheat fields, etc. to control broadleaf weeds and sedge weeds, such as Xanthium sibiricum, Datura, Ambrosia retroflexa, wild watermelon seedlings, Purslane, Solanum nigrum, Cassia, Morning Glory, Cyperus rotundus, etc.

Mechanism of Action

Halosulfuron methyl is a selective systemic herbicide that inhibits the plant's ALS enzyme (acetolactate synthase) to prevent the biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids such as valine, isoleucine, and leucine, ultimately destroying protein synthesis and interfering with DNA synthesis and cell division and growth. It can be absorbed through the roots, stems, and leaves of plants, and is conducted in the xylem and phloem to act on the target enzyme (acetolactate synthase). Symptoms of weed damage include growth cessation, chlorosis, death of the apical meristem, and plant death after 2-3 weeks.

1. Application in rice:

Halosulfuron methyl is safe for rice and can be used before and after rice seedlings. It has good control effect on paddy field sedges, and can also achieve the effect of eradicating weeds with developed bulbs such as wild water chestnuts, three-edged grass, and cyperus. It also has good control effect on some broad-leaved weeds such as lilac, moshangcai, sharp petal flower, dwarf arrowhead, and wild arrowhead. The control effect on barnyard grass and duckweed is 70-75%.

2. Application in corn:

Apply once at the 3-5 leaf stage after corn seedlings, the 3-5 leaf stage of weeds, and the best period is the 4-5 leaf stage. The dosage of the preparation is 75% WDG45-60 grams/hectare, diluted with 15-30 liters of water. The fresh weight inhibition rate of common weeds in corn fields such as Xanthium sibiricum, Commelina communis, Amaranthus retroflexus, and Cyperus rotundus is above 90%, but it is basically ineffective against grass weeds. It can be mixed with nicosulfuron, sulfamethoxam, atrazine, bromoxynil, dicamba, and pyrasulfuron in corn fields.

3. Application on sorghum:

Apply the drug from the 2-leaf stage to the heading stage after sorghum seedlings, and when the weeds are 2 to 4 leaves. The dosage is 50% WP72-140 g (active ingredient 36-70 g)/hectare. It can be mixed with atrazine, bromoxynil, dicamba, and pyrasulfuron in sorghum fields.

4. Application on peppers and tomatoes:

(1) Pre-seedling soil spray: One day before tomato transplanting, when the weeds are 2-4 leaves, add 40 kg of water per mu and 6-8 g of halosulfuron methyl 75% WDG per mu, and spray the soil evenly. Do not use in case of strong winds or when rain is expected within 1 hour.

(2) Post-seedling stem and leaf treatment: After transplanting tomatoes and when weeds are in the 2-4 leaf stage, spray 4-8 g of halosulfuron methyl 75% WDG with 30 kg of water per mu. After 60 days, the plant control and overall plant control effects on Cyperus rotundus, Amaranthus scabra, Pinus ternata and Amaranthus chinensis are excellent. As the dosage increases, the weed control effect also improves.

5. Application on spring wheat:

It is recommended to use halosulfuron methyl 75% WDG at a dosage of 75-90 g/ha (active ingredient content 56.25-67.5 g/ha) for stem and leaf spraying on spring wheat in the 3-5 leaf stage. The control effect on weeds such as Elsholtzia caesalpiniae, Amaranthus chinensis, Chenopodium album and Amaranthus chinensis can reach more than 80%.

6. Application in sweet potatoes:

Halosulfuron methyl 75% WDG has a good control effect on broadleaf weeds and sedge weeds such as Cyperus rotundus in sweet potato fields. It is highly safe for sweet potatoes and has no effect on sweet potato yields, and can achieve a certain yield increase effect. Therefore, halosulfuron methyl can be used in sweet potato fields. It is recommended to spray the test agent when the weeds are 2 to 4 leaves. Considering the comprehensive effect and drug cost, the recommended active ingredient content is 45 to 60 grams per hectare. Because the weed populations in different places are quite different and the planting conditions are different, further tests should be conducted and the effects on the next crop of multiple crops should be further observed before promotion and use.

7. Application in sugarcane:

Halosulfuron methyl is currently the only excellent pre- and post-emergence herbicide that is safe for sugarcane and can completely eradicate Cyperus rotundus in sugarcane fields. Its main characteristics are low dosage, high efficacy, and special effects on broadleaf weeds and sedge weeds. The appropriate period for the use of halosulfuron methyl 75% WDG in sugarcane fields is:

(1) Pre-emergence closed treatment: Before the emergence of sugarcane seedlings, when Cyperus rotundus sprouts in large quantities, keep the soil moist. The recommended dosage is 6-8 grams per mu diluted with 60-90 kilograms of water for spraying and soil treatment.

(2) Post-emergence treatment: When the Cyperus rotundus in the sugarcane field has 7-11 leaves, spray 10-15 grams of 75% WDG per mu diluted with 120-180 kilograms of water for spraying, which has the best effect.
