Prothioconazole is a broad-spectrum triazolethione fungicide developed and launched by Bayer in 2004. Because prothioconazole has the characteristics of high activity, broad spectrum and relatively safety, it is widely used in wheat, soybeans, rapeseed, rice, peanuts, sugar beets, etc. around the world. It has excellent control effect on almost all fungal diseases of cereal crops. Such as powdery mildew, scab, sheath blight and rust, etc. It can effectively prevent and control soil-borne diseases of rape and peanuts as well as major leaf diseases, such as gray mold, brown spot, black spot, rust and black shank.
In the field of global fungicides, prothioconazole is an epoch-making product with very successful commercial development. After being launched in 2004, it quickly became an outstanding product among global fungicides. Global sales in 2023 will be US$1.328 billion, already occupying the second position in the global fungicide sales market, second only to azoxystrobin.
The compound preparation can not only effectively delay the occurrence and development of resistance to prothioconazole, but also effectively produce a synergistic effect, thus extending the life cycle of the product. In the past year or so, prothioconazole compound preparations have been frequently launched in major pesticide markets around the world.
1. Prothioconazole + Tebuconazole
In November 2023, the Brazilian company Nortox launched a new fungicide Scudeiro (prothioconazole + tebuconazole) in Brazil. Scudeiro is a broad-spectrum systemic fungicide registered for use on crops such as cotton, corn, wheat, barley and sorghum. It can control target spot and Asian rust without the use of auxiliaries. The Brazilian company Nortox stated that the product was developed through cooperative trials by 27 research institutions in Brazil. It has a differentiated formula and has been proven to be effective in controlling target spot disease and Asian rust, as well as its selectivity in soybean cultivation.
2. Prothioconazole + Clothianidin + Trifluconazole
In September 2023, Bayer announced that its potato seed block treatment agent Emesto® Complete was registered in Canada. Emesto Complete is a compound product (clothianidin + prothioconazole + trifluconazole), which can control a variety of major pests and diseases in a broad spectrum. With the addition of an improved clothianidin formula, the new product can effectively control aphids, Colorado potato beetles, potato flea beetles and potato leafhoppers. It is also highly effective against some of the most serious potato diseases, such as Fusarium tuber rot (including currently resistant strains) and seed-borne root nodule diseases (such as rhizoctonia, stem rot and black mole). Bayer said that Emesto Complete is easy to package, easy to apply, uses less water, has a small dosage and is highly efficient. It will be launched in the 2024 planting season.
3. Prothioconazole + picoxystrobin
In March 2023, Corteva launched a new fungicide Viatude (prothioconazole + picoxystrobin) in Canada. Later in August 2023, Corteva launched Viatude in the U.S. market to expand its fungicide product portfolio in the United States. Viatude Fungicide is an all-in-one premix containing Onmira™ (picoxystrobin) and prothioconazole. This product provides farmers in soybean-producing states in the northern United States with a new solution to effectively prevent and treat soybean white silk disease. Viatude fungicide is also labeled for use on canola. Viatude fungicide can be quickly absorbed and transferred to all parts of the entire plant. Its four delivery properties can quickly surround, penetrate and protect the leaves and stems, thereby strengthening the plant for higher yield potential. In addition, farmers can combine Viatude fungicide with Apreach fungicide in a two-application program to strengthen plants throughout the year, and can also be combined with other integrated pest management measures to help prevent the development of disease resistance.
The Brazilian pesticide company Nortox displayed a prothioconazol compound product Protioconazol P registered by the company in Paraguay during the Agrodinámica 2023 Expo held in Paraguay from November 28 to December 1, 2023. This product combines two active ingredients, prothioconazole and picoxystrobin, and is a fungicide product with systemic, preventive, therapeutic and post-infectious effects and residual effect.
4. Prothioconazole + Trifluconazole
In July 2023, Syngenta launched the fungicide MIRAVIS® Pro (triflufenac + prothioconazole) developed based on ADEPIDYN® (triflufenac) technology in Brazil. ADEPIDYN® is the basis of a new generation of fungicides with a broad spectrum of action and stronger control capabilities. In field trials, this new fungicide showed very good control effects on target spot disease after the first application. MIRAVIS® Pro also has outstanding performance in controlling DFC (terminal diseases), especially leaf blight and fusarium wilt. Its formula uses Empowered Control Technology to improve product efficacy without the use of additives or added solutions.
5. Prothioconazole + Fluopyram
In February 2023, Bayer launched a high-quality premixed fungicide Luna®Pro (prothioconazole + fluopyram). Luna®Pro is the first DMI-containing foliar fungicide provided by Bayer for potatoes, which can control both foliar and soil-borne diseases of potatoes. Luna®Pro uses the DMI foliar fungicide prothioconazole and the SDHI fungicide fluopyram. DMI (1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolinone) works by preventing fungal development at the cellular level, helping to improve plant health and increase yield potential. A new addition to Bayer's potato portfolio, the combination of two proven active ingredients provides effective protection against potato early blight, white mold and other key diseases, increasing flexibility and improving resistance management.
6. Prothioconazole + Trifloxystrobin + Fluopyram
In July 2023, Bayer CropScience announced the launch of Delaro Complete (prothioconazole + trifloxystrobin + fluopyram), a fungicide for legume crops such as chickpeas and lentils, in Western Canada. Delaro Complete has 3 modes of action (Groups 3, 7, 11). Based on the mature performance of Delaro (propiconazole+oxime ester) for preventive control of the most important bean crop diseases, it provides important management tools for bean and chickpea growers to resist anthracnose and leaf spot diseases, and can provide higher levels of disease prevention and potential yield protection for bean growers.
7. Prothioconazole + Mancozeb + Triflufenac
ADAMA launched the ternary fungicide Almada at the Show Rural Coopavel agricultural expo in Brazil in February 2023. Almada has ADAMA's exclusive formulation, which combines three active ingredients: Triflufenac + Mancozeb + Prothioconazole. This smart combination results in higher quality and more efficient products, providing markets and farmers with a solution for broad soybean disease control. Almada uses T.O.V. technology and is a liquid oil dispersion (OD) formulation that can be used without tank mixing. In southern Brazil, the use of amide-based fungicides is the basis for controlling soybean diseases. Almada is applied to major crop diseases, including Asian rust, anthracnose, powdery mildew, leaf blight and target spot.
