What are the uses of 1-methylcyclopropene (MCP)?

What is 1-methylcyclopropene?

 

1-methylcyclopropene, or 1-MCP for short, is an unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon containing a carboxyl group, with the chemical formula C5H6O2. It is usually a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. 1-methylcyclopropene plays an important role in many industrial applications, such as the manufacture of organic compounds, polymers, and coatings.

In agriculture, 1-methylcyclopropene is mainly used for preserving fruits, vegetables, and flowers, and improving crop resistance. It can delay the ripening and senescence of fruits and vegetables, maintain their firmness, crispness, color, flavor, and nutritional components, reduce water evaporation, prevent wilting, and alleviate rot and physiological diseases caused by microorganisms.

 

It can inhibit ethylene-induced flower wilting, reduce flower and fruit drop, and extend the vase life of cut flowers; it can also improve the tolerance of crops to low temperatures and drought conditions.

 

Its mechanism of action is that 1-methylcyclopropene can irreversibly bind to ethylene receptors in plants, preemptively occupying ethylene receptor sites and blocking ethylene signal transduction. This inhibits ethylene-induced physiological responses such as ripening, senescence, and abscission, hindering the normal binding of ethylene to its receptors and suppressing the physiological effects of ethylene.

 

Applications of Methylcyclopropene in Agriculture

 

Although methylcyclopropene itself is not a pesticide or fertilizer, it has wide applications in agriculture. For example, during the fruit tree growing season, fruit growers may use methylcyclopropene to produce a compound called an endocrine disruptor to promote fruit tree growth. In addition, methylcyclopropene can be used to control insect pests such as corn weevils. It can also be used to control plant growth and development.
