What is the proper mixing of pesticides?

To increase the effect of pest control, the mixing of pesticides has become the norm, and the mixing of pesticides is also conducive to reducing labor costs, but improper mixing methods will bring disastrous consequences. In the worst case, the efficacy of the pesticide will be reduced, and in the worst case, pesticide damage or even accidents will occur. Today we will talk about how to mix pesticides scientifically and reasonably.

Pesticide mixing

Order of pesticide mixing

1. The order of pesticide mixing should be accurate

The order of mixing foliar fertilizers and pesticides is usually: micro-fertilizers, water-soluble fertilizers, wettable powders, water-dispersible granules, suspensions, microemulsions, water emulsions, water, and emulsifiable concentrates are added in sequence (in principle, no more than three types of pesticides should be mixed). Each time one is added, stir it thoroughly and mix it well, and then add the next one.

2. Add water first and then add medicine

When performing secondary dilution mixing, it is recommended to add half a bucket of water to the sprayer first, add the first pesticide and mix it well. Then, dilute the remaining pesticides with a plastic bottle, pour them into the sprayer after dilution, mix them well, and so on (if you want good efficacy, don't be lazy).

3. Mix and use now

No matter what pesticide you mix, you should pay attention to "mix and use now, and don't store for a long time". Although there is no reaction when it is just mixed, it does not mean that it can be stored for a long time at will, otherwise it is easy to produce slow reaction and gradually reduce the efficacy.

Principles of mixed pesticides

1. Mixed pesticides with different toxicity mechanisms

Mixing pesticides with different mechanisms of action can improve the prevention and control effect and delay the development of resistance in pests and diseases.

2. Mixed pesticides with different toxicity effects

Insecticides have contact, stomach poison, fumigation, systemic and other modes of action, and fungicides have protection, treatment, systemic and other modes of action. If these pesticides with different prevention and control effects are mixed, they can complement each other and produce good prevention and control effects.

3. Mixing insecticides that act on different insect stages

Mixed insecticides that act on different insect stages can kill various insect stages of pests in the field, kill insects thoroughly, and thus improve the control effect.

4. Mixed pesticides with different time effects

Some types of pesticides have good quick-acting control effects, but short-lasting effects; some types have poor quick-acting control effects, but long-lasting effects. Such mixed pesticides not only have good control effects after application, but also play a long-term control role.

5. Mixed with synergists

Although synergists have no direct toxic effect on pests and diseases, they can improve the control effect when mixed with pesticides.

6. Mixed pesticides that act on different pests and diseases

When several pests and diseases occur at the same time, this method can reduce the number of spraying and working time, thereby improving the efficacy.

Precautions for mixed pesticides

Although there are many benefits to mixing pesticides, avoid mixing them randomly. Unreasonable mixing is not only unhelpful, but also has the opposite effect. The following points should be noted when mixing pesticides:

1. No change in physical properties

That is, after mixing, there should be no floating oil, flocculation, precipitation or discoloration, and no heat or bubbles. If they are both powders, granules, fumigants, and aerosols, they can generally be mixed; different formulations, such as wettable powders, emulsifiable concentrates, concentrated emulsions, suspensions, and aqueous solvents, should not be mixed arbitrarily.

2. No chemical changes

① Many agents cannot be mixed with alkaline or acidic pesticides. Under alkaline conditions such as Bordeaux mixture and lime sulfur, carbamates, pyrethroid insecticides, and dithiocarbamic acid fungicides such as thiram and mancozeb are prone to hydrolysis or complex chemical changes, thereby destroying the original structure.

② Under acidic conditions, 2,4-D sodium salt, 2-methyl-4-chloro sodium salt, amitraz, etc. will also decompose, thereby reducing the efficacy.

③ In addition to acidity and alkalinity, many pesticide varieties cannot be mixed with drugs containing metal ions.

④ Dithiocarbamate fungicides, 2,4-D herbicides and copper preparations can generate copper salts to reduce the efficacy.

⑤ Methyl thiophanate and thiophanate can be complexed with copper ions and lose their activity.

⑥ In addition to copper preparations, other preparations containing heavy metal ions such as iron, zinc, manganese, nickel and other preparations should be mixed with caution.

⑦ Mixing lime sulfur with Bordeaux mixture can produce harmful copper sulfide and increase the content of soluble copper ions.

⑧ Dipyridamole, butachlor and other pesticides cannot be mixed with organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides. Some chemical changes may cause pesticide damage.

3. Pesticides with cross-resistance should not be mixed

For example, fungicides carbendazim and methyl thiophanate have cross-resistance. Mixing not only fails to delay the development of drug resistance in pathogens, but will accelerate the development of drug resistance, so they cannot be mixed.

4. Biological pesticides cannot be mixed with fungicides

Many pesticide fungicides are lethal to biological pesticides, so microbial pesticides and fungicides cannot be mixed.
