Recently, Sumitomo Chemical launched a new herbicide Rapidicil during the 2023 Argentina Weed Congress. The active ingredient is Epyrifenacil. This is the first product on the Argentine market to use this active ingredient to deal with the increasing problem of resistant pests and diseases in agricultural production.
Sumitomo Chemical's regional marketing coordinator for Argentina pointed out that more and more weeds are showing some tolerance or resistance to different types of herbicides. Epyrifenacil provides a new tool for the management of annual grassy weeds such as cowgrass, barnyardgrass, ryegrass and fieldgrass, which are a serious problem in most areas of Argentina, as well as difficult-to-control weeds such as pigweed. Sumitomo Chemical classifies the product as an innovative solution and is preparing for full launch next year.
Epyrifenacil is a uracil herbicide developed and announced by Sumitomo Chemical Company of Japan. It obtained the ISO general name in March 2020. Its mechanism of action is a protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitor. Epyrifenacil is broad-spectrum and fast-acting, can control most broadleaf weeds and grass weeds, and has low toxicity to mammals. Annual peak sales are expected to reach US$100 million.
In addition, Sumitomo Chemical also introduced the early-launched fungicide Excalia Max (inpyrfluxam + tebuconazole), which provides additional performance by protecting leaf area during the critical period of the crop. This product has excellent systemic properties and conductivity, has a long lasting effect, and can prevent and treat various rust and spot diseases.
