Recently, the European Commission announced that it has decided not to extend its approval of the active ingredient of the pesticide difenfendi because its toxic metabolites may contaminate groundwater.
The decision is based on an assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) that the toxic metabolite of fenfenzofen poses a serious risk of groundwater contamination in all geographical and climatic conditions. Consequently, the Commission concluded that kysoxazim no longer met the approval criteria of the EU Pesticides Regulation.
The "European Commission Implementing Regulation" stipulates that EU member states must revoke the authorization of pesticide products containing fenprofen before January 31, 2024. In addition, any grace period granted by any Member State for the use of existing stocks shall expire by July 31, 2024. After this date, the product fenoxystrobin will not be available for use in the EU. Due to the decision not to renew, the product will now be phased out six months early.
Kresastrobin is a new type of methoxyacrylate fungicide. Mainly used on crops such as wheat, grapes and potatoes, the current non-renewal means farmers will need to switch to alternative pest management strategies or products in future planting seasons. Pesticide manufacturers can apply for re-approval of fenfenzofen at a later date, but will need to provide evidence that the risks identified by EFSA have been addressed.
