Pyroxasulfone, a widely used sealing herbicide in wheat fields

In recent years, the resistance of weeds in wheat fields has increased year by year. If the soil is not sealed properly, it will bring great pressure to post-emergence weeding. Next, we will share with you Pyroxasulfone, an excellent sealing herbicide for wheat fields.

Pyroxasulfone is a new broad-spectrum, highly active pre-emergent soil treatment agent developed by Japan Combination Chemical Company. Belonging to the imidazole herbicide class, it has a wide range of weed control spectrum and can effectively control weeds in the Poaceae family such as Setaria, Datang, Echinochloa, Echinochloa, Ryegrass, and Lolium, as well as broad-leaved weeds such as Amaranth , Mandala, Solanum, Abutilon, Wild Pea, Sophora, and Zicao. Pyroxasulfone has attracted more and more attention due to its excellent characteristics such as broad herbicidal spectrum, low dosage, high activity, and good safety.

The patent period for Pyroxasulfone compounds will expire on February 6, 2022, and related process patents are expected to expire between 2027 and 2032. In recent years, closed herbicides have been registered in Australia, the United States, Canada and other countries for use in wheat, corn, soybeans, cotton and other crop fields.

Mechanism of action

Pyroxasulfone is a very long-chain fatty acid elongation synthase inhibitor herbicide. Pyroxasulfone is absorbed by the young roots or shoots of weeds after application. By inhibiting the biosynthesis of very-long-chain fatty acid elongase (VLCFAE), it causes the construction of fatty acid precursors. It can inhibit the early growth of seedlings, destroy the meristem and coleoptile, and exert its medicinal effect.

The mechanism of action of Pyroxasulfone is similar to that of chloroacetamide herbicides such as acetochlor and metolachlor. However, it is applied to a wider range of crops, its biological activity is much greater than that of acetochlor and metolachlor, and its dosage is lower. Its dosage per unit area is 8 to 10 times lower than that of acetochlor and other chloroacetamide herbicides, so its weeding effect is better. Since the successful development of this variety, it has been widely used in a wide variety of crops and has a broad control spectrum. It has good weeding effects on annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in a variety of crop fields, and has been widely valued and highly praised by users. Under the current situation where acetochlor and metolachlor are banned in the European Union, and due to the poor safety of chloroacetamide herbicides, the largest-selling closed herbicides in my country, long-term use leads to increased resistance, and the herbicidal effect becomes worse and worse. Therefore, Pyroxasulfone will be able to fully replace the widely used chloroacetamide herbicides such as acetochlor and metolachlor and become a new mainstream variety of soil treatment agents.

What are the characteristics of Pyroxasulfone?

1. It kills weeds with a broad spectrum. Pyroxasulfone can effectively control a series of grass weeds such as Setaria spp., crabgrass, Echinacea genus, Panax spp., and broadleaf weeds such as Amaranthus spp., Datura spp., Solanum spp., Amaranthus spp., and Chenopodium spp. , covering almost all important weeds in dry fields in my country.

2. Wide range of applications, suitable for a variety of bulk crops. Pyroxasulfone is suitable for a wide range of crops and can be used on corn, soybeans, cotton, wheat, sunflowers, potatoes, peanuts and other bulk crops to control annual grass weeds and broadleaf weeds. It is rare to find such a wide range of applicable crops among registered herbicide varieties.

3. Good preventive effect and long lasting effect. According to a series of domestic and foreign field test results, the herbicidal spectrum of Pyroxasulfone is similar to that of chloroacetamide herbicides such as acetochlor and metolachlor. However, its control effect on almost all weeds such as ragweed, ragweed, broad-leaved brachiaria, millet, and foxtail grass is better than metolachlor, and the control effect is stable for 63 days after spraying. Under drought conditions, its effectiveness in controlling green foxtail, tribulus terrestris and amaranth is better than metolachlor; low-dose control of various weeds also has a longer effective period.

4. High activity and low dosage. It can be safely used on a variety of bulk crops in dry fields, such as corn, soybeans, cotton, peanuts, wheat, sunflowers, potatoes, etc. The dosage per unit area is 125~250g a.i./hm2. The dosage is 8 to 10 times lower than metolachlor and acetochlor, equivalent to only 12% of the dosage of S-metolachlor and 10% of the dosage of acetochlor. The weeding effect is very good.

5. Good mixability with other herbicides. Domestic and foreign researchers have proven that it has extensive mixability. For example, when mixed with disulfuron-methyl, flufenacet, atrazine, penfentrazone, ethyl ethyl methyl ester, saflufenacil, propargyl flufenacet, sulfentrafen, etc. Used on corresponding crops, excellent complementary weeding effects can be obtained.

summary

Sealed herbicides can minimize the pressure of post-emergence weeding and achieve twice the result with half the effort, so choosing an excellent herbicide is particularly critical. Pyroxasulfone has low dosage, high activity, broad control and long lasting effect. It can well meet the needs of closed weeding and is worthy of the expectation and choice of the majority of planting friends.
