Neonicotinoid resistance is real. It exists in some aphid populations, some planthopper populations, and some whitefly populations. But "exists" does not mean "everywhere." In most regions, imidacloprid still works well.

Point 1 – Use seed treatment only where needed
Do not treat every field every year. Reserve imidacloprid seed treatment for fields with a history of early-season pest pressure. On low-risk fields, skip treatment and scout instead. Reducing total hectares treated reduces overall selection pressure.
Point 2 – Never apply imidacloprid twice in a row on the same field
Two successive crops with imidacloprid seed treatment (e.g., wheat followed by corn) is two exposures. That is acceptable if you rotate chemical classes for the rest of each season. But wheat after wheat with imidacloprid every time – that is how resistance develops.
Point 3 – Do not combine seed treatment with foliar imidacloprid
Some growers use seed treatment AND a foliar spray of the same active ingredient in the same crop. This is the fastest way to select for resistance. Pick one. Seed treatment alone is usually sufficient.
Point 4 – Use the labeled rate – not less, not more
Cutting rates increases survival of partially resistant individuals. Increasing rates wastes money and does not kill resistant individuals any better. Stick to:
Wheat/barley: 60-70 g per 10 kg seed
Corn: 70-80 g per 10 kg seed
Soybeans: 60-70 g per 10 kg seed
Potatoes: 300-400 mL per 1000 kg seed pieces
Point 5 – Rotate modes of action
After imidacloprid seed treatment, use foliar products from different IRAC groups:
Group 9B (pymetrozine) – for aphids and hoppers
Group 23 (spirotetramat) – two-way systemic, controls immatures
Group 4C (sulfoxaflor) – different neonicotinoid subgroup
Group 28 (chlorantraniliprole) – for caterpillars and beetles, not aphids
Do NOT rotate with clothianidin, thiamethoxam, or dinotefuran – same IRAC group 4A.
Point 6 – Scout after the seed treatment window ends
Seed treatment protects for 60-80 days depending on crop. After that, imidacloprid levels in leaves drop below lethal concentrations. Scout starting at 60 days. If pests exceed thresholds, use a non-group-4A product.
Point 7 – Keep records
For each treated field, write down: crop, variety, seeding rate, product rate, treatment date, planting date, and any foliar sprays used later. If you see poor performance, those records help diagnose whether resistance is present or something else (weather, application error) caused the failure.
Point 8 – Test if you suspect resistance
Signs of resistance:
Aphids survive on treated plants despite correct application.
You need higher-than-labeled rates to get control.
Point 9 – Do not rely on synergists
Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) can overcome some metabolic resistance in some species. But PBO is not a solution – it adds cost and does not work against target-site resistance. If you need PBO to make imidacloprid work, you already have resistance. Switch products.
