Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) and potato virus Y (PVY) spread the same way: aphids feed on an infected plant, then fly to a healthy plant and transmit the virus. By the time you see virus symptoms (leaf rolling, mottling, stunting), the infection is already inside the tuber seed for next season. You cannot cure infected plants. You can only stop the aphids that spread the virus. Imidacloprid 600g/L FS applied to seed pieces does exactly that – kills aphids before they transmit.

An aphid lands on an infected potato leaf. It probes with its stylet (mouthpart). If the plant has PLRV, the aphid picks up virus particles in less than one minute. Then it flies. Lands on a healthy plant. Probes again. Virus particles transfer to the healthy plant. Infection established. All in under 3 minutes. You never see the aphid. You never see the feeding damage. But the virus is now inside your crop and your seed tubers for next year.

Imidacloprid moves from the seed piece into the developing sprouts, then into leaves. When an aphid probes a leaf from a treated plant, it ingests a lethal dose of imidacloprid. The aphid may still probe, but it dies before it can fly to another plant. Virus transmission stops. Field trials across Europe and North America consistently show 70-85% reduction in PLRV and 50-70% reduction in PVY with imidacloprid seed-piece treatment.

Dilute 300-400 mL of FS in 10-20 liters of water per 1000 kg of seed pieces. Spray onto cut seed on a conveyor belt or in a rotating drum. Ensure every piece gets wet. Let dry for 1-2 hours before planting. Do not pile wet pieces – they will stick.

Foliar sprays work, but timing is critical. You must spray before aphids arrive and before they transmit. That means spraying on a calendar schedule, not when you see aphids. Many growers spray 4-6 times per season for virus control. Seed-piece treatment reduces this to 1-2 sprays. Savings on spray costs and application labor often exceed the seed treatment cost.

1.This product does not cure already-infected plants. If you plant infected seed tubers, the resulting crop will have virus regardless of treatment. Start with clean seed. Treatment only prevents new infections from incoming aphids.

2.Treated seed pieces are toxic to birds if left on soil surface. Plant at recommended depth (7-10 cm) to cover all seed. Do not leave leftover treated seed in field corners where birds can eat it.
