Brazil To Expand Pesticide Registration For Minor Crops

On November 4, 2022, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA), together with the Brazilian Agency for Environmental Protection and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), jointly issued a proposal for Decree No. 691. The proposed decree stipulates the guidelines and requirements for the registration of pesticides and their ingredients for crops with insufficient phytosanitary support (CSFI) (ie minor crops and small-purpose crops), as well as the allowable maximum residue limits.

The proposal aims to adjust and improve Joint Normative Directive No. 1/2014 and expand the registration of CSFI products that can be used as an option for integrated pest management in favor of safe and effective development of these crops.

It is worth mentioning that the proposal provides for the secondary use of pesticide products, including use in soilless crops, or occasional use in crops with important economic traits, such as seed treatment or only for export and planting to remove eucalyptus Propagating material of all forest species other than crops. In Joint Normative Directive 1/2014, there is no provision for product registration.
