As of March 2022, Brazil has registered a total of 433 biopesticides, an increase of 404% in nine years. In 2013, only 107 biopesticides were registered in Brazil, indicating that Brazil has taken the lead in adopting these pesticide alternatives. In addition, as of March this year, 502 agricultural biological products have been registered in Brazil, and this trend will continue.
Brazilian soybean farmers spent 829 million reais on biological pest control last year, compared with 391 million reais in 2019, according to Blink consultancy. The soybean crop today accounts for nearly half of the country's biopesticide applications.
Anthracnose, target spot, white mold and Asian rust are some of the major foliar diseases causing damage to soybean crops in Brazil. To control these diseases, Brazilian growers apply chemical fungicides several times a year. In each cycle, the resistance of pathogens requires the development of new active substances to control.
To achieve greater efficiency, profitability, and sustainability, growers are investing in integrated management and biopesticides to control crop diseases.
Blink said that in the past two years, the development of the application of advanced formulation technology biopesticides has promoted the growth of the Brazilian market by 75%, from 946 million Brazilian reals in 2019 to 1.79 billion Brazilian reals in 2021.
A study by IHS Markit also predicts that the industry will be worth BRL 16.9 billion by 2030.
