Draft EU Glyphosate Extension Application To Be Reviewed Again On November 15

Draft EU glyphosate extension application to be reviewed again on November 15

According to the European Commission circular, on September 27, 2022, the Glyphosate Review Working Group AGG provided the EFSA European Food Safety Authority with a draft implementing regulation that proposes to approve an extension of the existing registration period of glyphosate for one year (the original Expiry date 15 December 2022) and vote at the EU Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCoPAFF) on 14 October 2022.

Although a majority of Member States supported the draft extension, there was still no required/quorum majority and no concluding observations were reached. The Commission has referred the Bill to the Arbitration Commission for further consideration on 15 November 2022.

The EFSA peer review conclusion was originally planned to be completed and submitted to the European Commission, Member States and the applicant Glyphosate Re-evaluation Working Group (GRG) in July 2023, and there is a high probability that it will not meet the expiration date of the active ingredient of glyphosate (2022). December 15), but the European Commission is legally obliged to consider the EFSA's conclusions.

However, whether the validity period of glyphosate can be extended for one year has not yet been approved. In such a complicated situation, what will be the fate of glyphosate in the EU?
