Lallemand launches first biopesticide based on Cordyceps javanica to control whitefly in Brazil
Canadian company Lallemand announced that it has registered its biopesticide - LALGUARD JAVA WP in Brazil, which is expected to be on the market in the first half of 2023.
LALGUARD JAVA WP can be used on any crop infested by whitefly (Bemisia tabaci race B). Toxicological classification as "Category 5 - Product unlikely to cause serious harm". With regard to its classification of potential hazards to the environment, LALGUARD JAVA WP is classified as "Class 4 - little to no hazard to the environment".
Entomopathogenic fungi are one of the most important natural enemies of whiteflies and can directly enter the body of insects without ingestion.

Whitefly populations increase substantially during drought periods on all crops, causing severe crop losses. Embrapa and Lallemand began their partnership seven years ago and set out to develop the use of the fungus Cordyceps javanica for whitefly control. The collaboration with Lallemand has been very important to Embrapa, with the results of the research being translated into a product that benefits farmers.
The biggest difference between LALGUARD JAVA products and other products is that it is more resistant to high temperature and low humidity. In order to ensure the best product effectiveness, Lallemand researchers carried out field trials in different regions for product positioning, and found that LALGUARD JAVA is more tolerant to high temperatures. LALGUARD JAVA has also been shown to be active in conditions of low relative humidity, which leads to very positive results in terms of application safety, especially in such adverse conditions. The durability of this product is largely due to its effectiveness against all stages of whitefly infestation from nymph to adult.
