Mancozeb May Be Banned in The UK, With Current Registration Expiring At The End Of January 2024

AgRecently, the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) proposed withdrawing the approval of mancozeb, the active ingredient of the fungicide, which would be a major development affecting the agricultural sector.

The decision follows a comprehensive review under Article 21 of EU Retained Regulation (EC) 1107/2009, which allows the HSE to reassess the approval of any pesticide active substance based on new scientific data. The review's assessment of the latest evidence and data submitted by UPL and Indofil Industries regarding mancozeb concluded that mancozeb no longer meets the necessary criteria for approval. This conclusion could lead to significant changes in the use of mancozeb in the UK.

Mancozeb's approval in the UK is currently due to expire on January 31, 2024, but the HSE has stated that this approval may be temporarily extended for three months, pending confirmation. UPL and Indofil Industries said they are committed to working closely with global and UK stakeholders and UK authorities to maintain the supply of mancozeb products in the UK market.

Mancozeb is a highly effective, protective and established fungicide used to prevent plant diseases in rice, soybeans, wheat, onions, potatoes and other vegetables and fruits. In the agrochemical industry, mancozeb is increasingly becoming an important tool in managing fungicide resistance. UPL was the first to introduce mancozeb into soybean production in 2014 and has proven to be highly effective in controlling fungal diseases, promoting growth and increasing yields.
