Drought warnings were issued for 53 counties along or south of the Missouri River. About three-quarters of Missouri is in mild drought and above, and more than 30 percent is in severe drought. The drought will continue to affect farmers and ranchers throughout the fall and winter.
Earlier predictions that extreme heat in the US state of Iowa would spread north and east have become a reality. Continued high temperatures along the U.S. Southern Plains have adversely affected pollinating crops in the Western Corn Belt and even reduced yields in some crops. However, the heat in eastern Iowa was not extreme, and future rainfall could mitigate the impact and provide crops with the moisture they need to grow.
Valent's corn herbicide Maverick has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The product provides corn growers with three effective modes of action for long-term, broad-spectrum control of problematic weeds, including amaranth vines, long amaranth, and annual grass weeds. Maverick is flexible in application, can be tank mixed, and can be used simultaneously with atrazine. Maverick contains 7.45% clopyralid, 9.91% mesotrione and 7.45% mesotrizone, combining three different modes of action, making Maverick an excellent choice for herbicide resistance management programs.
