Ion exchange resin can be classified into styrene-based resins and acrylic-based resins based on the type of their matrix. The type of chemically active groups in the resin determines its primary properties and classification.

1. Water Treatment

The most prominent application of ion exchange resins is in water treatment. In the power industry, they are primarily used for feedwater treatment and condensate polishing in thermal power plants, with a smaller portion used for circulating water and generator cooling water.

Because they effectively remove impurities such as excess nitrates, fluoride, and trace heavy metals from drinking water, they also play a crucial role in drinking water purification.

2. Food Industry

In the food industry, ion exchange resins are used in sugar and MSG production, performing purification, decolorization, odor removal, and separation and catalysis. For example, due to the high pigment and salt content of sugar syrups in the sugar industry, they are used to decolorize and purify sugar products such as xylitol, and to remove salt and acidic substances from beverages and fruit juices.

3. Medicine and Health

Ion exchange resins are used in the pharmaceutical and biochemical industries for the extraction and separation of antibiotics, vitamin concentration, and the extraction and purification of natural medicinal products. They can also be used in controlled-release and targeted drug delivery systems.

4. Preparation and Purification of Reagents

For example, reagent-grade potassium nitrite contains only 94% KNO2, but a significant portion of the impurity is KNO3, which cannot be removed by crystallization. A 1 mol/L reagent-grade potassium nitrite solution is passed through a NO2- anion exchange resin column. Because NO2- has a lower ion exchange affinity than NO3-, NO3- is completely and quantitatively transferred to the resin, removing NO2 from the resin. The KNO2 in the effluent has a purity of at least 99.9%. The column can be regenerated with pure NaNO2 and reused.

5. Catalysis

In organic synthesis, acids and bases are often used as catalysts for reactions such as esterification, hydrolysis, transesterification, and hydration. Using ion exchange resins instead of inorganic acids and bases can also carry out these reactions, but offers further advantages.

6. Environmental Protection

Many toxic ions and non-ionic substances contained in aqueous or non-aqueous solutions can be recycled using digital technology, such as removing metal ions from electroplating wastewater and recovering useful substances from film production wastewater.
