Pymetrozine has a unique mode of action. It has no knock‑down activity and exerts no direct toxicity against insects. However, once insects come into contact with the compound, they immediately and irreversibly stop feeding. Pymetrozine acts on the serotonin signal transduction pathway in the pest's hemolymph (blood), inducing a neurotoxic‑like response. The neural center that controls feeding behaviour is inhibited, and normal feeding activity is disrupted through the modulation of the neural centre that regulates fluid ingestion. Because of this entirely novel mode of action, pymetrozine shows no cross‑resistance and can be used to control various resistant pest strains. Due to its high selectivity, low mammalian toxicity, and safety to birds, fish, and non‑target arthropods, pymetrozine demonstrates excellent prospects for use in integrated pest management (IPM).

1. Pymetrozine should not be mixed with alkaline pesticides such as Bordeaux mixture or lime sulphur (lime‑sulfur) solution. It is toxic to bees and silkworms. Application should therefore be avoided during periods of bee activity and kept away from mulberry orchards and silkworm rearing houses.

2. Pymetrozine rapidly stops pest feeding, but its lethal action is slow and may take several days. Moreover, due to continuous use over many years, resistance may increase. Therefore, it is best to alternate pymetrozine with other types of insecticides or use premix formulations (e.g., nitenpyram + pymetrozine, thiamethoxam + pymetrozine) to improve control efficacy.

3. The pre‑harvest interval (safe interval) for pymetrozine varies depending on the crop. Application should generally cease 7‑14 days before harvest to avoid exceeding pesticide residue limits.
