Agricultural Dynamics in Latin America

Recently, the plant defense departments of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay issued an epidemic prevention alert to the world and notified the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) after the discovery of a small insect called Aethina tumida in beehives in Paraguay and Bolivia. Chile's Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) has announced enhanced measures to control pests, calling on the public to cooperate in preventing pests from entering the country.



In order to complete the regulations regulating the Certificate of Rural Products (CPR), on July 20, Brazil approved Law No. 14,421/2022. One of the improvements is the expansion of the rural product concept in order to mobilize resources for plant protection and environmental protection projects (green CPR) and to provide funds and processors for other links in the production chain (suppliers of inputs and equipment). At the same time, improve the guarantee registration, securities registration procedures and deadlines and other regulations.



The fifth Global Agribusiness Forum (GAF) opened in São Paulo on 25 July. One of the themes this year is sustainable agriculture, such as low carbon agriculture. The Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) emphasized at the meeting that Brazilian rural producers have gradually adopted sustainable production methods and planned to improve 70 million hectares of degraded pastures.



From September, Brazil's Decree No. 462, which deals with the innovation policy of the Executive Committee of the Cocoa Crops Programme (Ceplac), will come into force. The decree will guide the Commission's actions to promote innovation by creating technologies, products, processes and services for the Brazilian cocoa farming industry.



Recently, Nutrien Ltd. announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire the Brazilian company Casa do Adubo S.A. The acquisition includes locations in Acre, Bahia, Espirito Santo, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, 39 retail locations and 10 distribution centers in São Paulo and Tocantins. The transaction contributes to Nutrien's retail growth strategy in Brazil. The acquisition of Casa do Adubo is expected to generate approximately $400 million in additional operating sales, increasing Nutrien Ag Solutions' total annual sales in Latin America to approximately $2.2 billion.
