After dozens of experimental tests in sugar cane fields in various regions of Brazil, Syngenta successfully developed and launched the microbial agent CERTANO. This product is Syngenta's first biological product for sugarcane cultivation. It has the functions of nematicide, fungicide and growth promotion, and can exert stable effects quickly and permanently. The official launch of CERTANO was recently held in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo state, for researchers, cane growers and sugar factory representatives, with more than 200 attendees.
CERTANO contains Bacillus veleis, a multifunctional microorganism that combats a variety of nematodes and diseases common to sugarcane crops. Fernando Godinho, professor and researcher at the Goiano Federal Institute (Goiano), pointed out that the product's "three-in-one" function works quickly and permanently. "The metabolites mainly inhibit the germination of nematode eggs and larvae, as well as fungal spores, so the product is both a biological nematicide and a biological fungicide." Godinho also said that Bacillus veleis can induce plant hormone pathways and promote the development of sugarcane roots and the growth of above-ground parts.
Godinho said: "Research on nematodes in recent years in collaboration with the Brazilian Society of Nematology has shown that these pests can reduce crop yields by up to 16% per season, in addition to shortening crop life." This product targets the entire sugarcane growth cycle and can effectively control a variety of harmful nematodes existing in sugarcane fields.
Syngenta Marketing Manager Renato Pirola shared a technical research report at the press conference, saying that if Brazil neglects to control nematodes in the next ten years, it may cause losses of up to 143 billion reais. "If nematodes are not properly controlled, the life of sugarcane fields is shortened, causing significant economic losses. Therefore, Syngenta has launched products to control this hidden pest, addressing different important control areas, such as using innovative chemical and biological products, diversified control strategies and digital technologies to assist farmers. "
Leandro Bessa, Syngenta's head of crop protection portfolio, said: "This new product can be used almost throughout the year and is physically and chemically compatible with other products. This product launch marks Syngenta's official entry into the field of biologics for sugarcane. ″
